There are a few foundations we should look at to make sure we are living out a healthy life:

Be aware of what you are eating.

and Eat at Home

Are You Sleeping Enough?

 

One thing people forget about often is the importance of sleeping enough.

The CDC reports that insufficient sleep is a public health epidemic.  Lack of sleep is affecting our ability to concentrate, remember important information, negatively affecting hobbies, driving, taking care of money, and work. 

When we don’t allow ourselves to rest, we are actually hurting ourselves more than we realize. Beyond reduced learning and memory ability, lack of sleep is linked to increased weight gain by slowing our metabolism, increased hypertension, and increases our risk for disease.  

 

What keeps you up at night? 

If you know the cause of your sleep issues, that can help you figure out how to treat it the best!

 

Low in Magnesium

If you are like me, you battle sometimes with insomnia. 

For me it is really bad during pregnancy due to a deficiency in magnesium. 

When this is the cause, thankfully, it is an easy fix!

I was able to supplement using a homemade magnesium oil that I could rub into my skin right before bed. 

Now, I have a 6 month old that is waking me up through the night. Magnesium oil could also work for babies too if they are waking up due to restlessness and not hunger.

 

You could also try an epsom salt bath right before bed. 

 

 

 

Too Much Screen Time 

Turning off the electronics early during the evening can also help you wind down and give your eyes and brain a cue that it is time for bed. Watching TV at night or reading your phone or kindle can trick your brain into thinking it is still day light and will prevent you from going to sleep as easily.

Also, sleeping in a pitch black room will help you sleep (I sleep with an eye mask). This encourages the brain to release melatonin and help you fall asleep. 

 

Too Tired to Sleep

Try going to bed earlier this week and see how it affects the rest of your day. Everyone is different as to how much sleep they need.

Right now I am going to bed between 10 and 11pm, waking up about 2 times during the night with my 6 month old and waking up for the day between 7-8 am feeling rested. 

 

Stress

If you are laying in bed and feeling stressed about what is happening in your life or something that is going on the next day… you may actually benefit from a natural stress relief.

I know for me, it works so fast (I use it during the day too if I’m feeling anxious about something) Plus, it is all natural! 

You can take it at night and finally feel relaxed enough to fall asleep. I know you will love it!

  1. I’ve been trying to get better about sleeping more these days and getting QUALITY rest. Granted, it doesn’t always work out, but I’ve found that since I started increasing my running mileage, I’m sleeping a LOT more sounder. I’ve also noticed that turning off the television helps immensely, too!

    • Yes! I need to follow the tip of turning off electronics an hour before going to sleep. I have heard about some glasses to wear to help your eyes adjust to electronic’s blue light, but I haven’t used them. Thanks for reading!
