Low Carb and Keto Friendly Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Lately, I’ve been absolutely dreaming about the mouthwatering flavors of a classic Cheesesteak. The inspiration to put a twist on this beloved dish struck me after I stumbled upon Peace Love and Low Carb’s delightful recipe for Stuffed Philly Cheesesteak Peppers. But for my family, a casserole is often a more practical choice for our meals.

So, I thought, why not give it a whirl? I decided to roll up my sleeves and create my very own version of a Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak Casserole. Let’s dive into this culinary adventure together!

Simple Low Carb Casserole with Sliced Beef Options

I have been making this recipe for many years now. During that time, I have used a couple of different sliced steak options for this recipe. Honestly, any beef sirloin that is thinly sliced should work well. What I personally love to use is Gary’s Quick Steak. I can find this in my local grocery store’s frozen section pretty easily. What I love most about Gary’s Quick Steak is that I can cook it from frozen (just follow the directions on the package) and it makes the best steak for this Keto Philly Cheesesteak Casserole. Because it is frozen, I can keep it in my freezer for a really quick 30 minute low carb meal option for any busy week night!

What is the best beef for Philly Cheesesteak Casserole?

The best beef to use for a Philly cheesesteak casserole is typically thinly sliced ribeye steak. Ribeye steak is known for its rich flavor and tenderness, making it ideal for this dish. However, if ribeye steak is not readily available or if you prefer a leaner option, you can also use thinly sliced sirloin steak or flank steak (Gary’s Quick Steak is sirloin).

When selecting beef for your Philly cheesesteak casserole, look for cuts that are well-marbled and thinly sliced. This will ensure that the beef cooks quickly and evenly, and that it remains tender and juicy in the casserole.

Additionally, you can customize the beef selection based on your personal preferences and dietary needs. For example, if you prefer a leaner cut of meat, you can opt for sirloin steak or flank steak. If you’re following a specific diet, such as keto or low-carb, you can choose a fattier cut like ribeye steak for added flavor and richness.

Ultimately, the choice of beef will depend on your taste preferences and availability, but thinly sliced ribeye steak is generally considered the classic and most flavorful option for a Philly cheesesteak casserole.

Ingredients in Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 3 medium onions sliced
  • 2 bell peppers sliced
  • 1 tsp of garlic
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp of crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 packages of Gary’s Quick Steak (you can use another brand equaling 1-2 lbs of meat)
  • 1 large box of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 package of Provolone cheese slices

How to Make Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

When I make this casserole, I start by sautéing the beef first with a tablespoon of coconut oil or avocado oil. Once the beef is cooked through, I put it aside in a separate bowl and sauté the rest of the ingredients (except for the cheese) in my large skillet.

Sauté the vegetables until they are tender, then add the meat back into the skillet and toss to mix together.

Then, pour all the ingredients into a baking dish and top with provolone cheese.

Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes, just to melt the cheese.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 3 medium onions sliced
  • 3 bell peppers; sliced
  • 1 tsp of garlic
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp of crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 2 packages of Gary's Quick Steak you can use another brand equaling 1-2 lbs of meat
  • 1 large box of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 package of Swiss cheese slices

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 375.
  • Heat large skillet.
  • Melt coconut oil in skillet.
  • Add onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, garlic, salt, pepper to the skillet
  • Continue to sauté until onions are translucent.
  • Remove veggies to a separate bowl.
  • Add a little oil if needed and saute beef until cooked through following directions.
  • Add veggies to meat in skillet and toss to mix well.
  • Transfer everything into a 9×13 pan.
  • Top with sliced provolone cheese.
  • Bake in oven for 10-15 minutes to melt cheese.

Keto Philly Cheeseteak Salad

Make it a salad: I like to eat this casserole on top of a bed of lettuce and make it into a salad. You could serve a salad on the side too for even more veggies! 

Keto Philly Cheesesteak Skillet Meal

Make it a skillet meal: If I’m feeling really pressed for time, I will skip the oven and just make this recipe on my skillet. I think the only main difference is how the cheese melts, but it is still delicious. Just follow the directions above with cooking the veggies and meat together. Instead of pouring the ingredients into a casserole dish, just leave it in the skillet on low and top with your provolone cheese. You can cover with a lid if you want the cheese to melt faster. After a few minutes, your cheese will be ooey-gooey and ready to eat!

Can you make this casserole ahead and freeze it?

I haven’t personally tried to make this casserole ahead and freeze it, but it does reheat really well for left overs. I would think that it is probably best fresh with the bell peppers though.

  6. This sounds great (minus the mushrooms, I’m allergic!). I’m thinking I would try doubling the recipe, freezing half and then once defrosted, only have to bake it the night of. I’m always looking for things my girls can pop in the oven before I get home!

  13. I just made this with a slight twist. I’m not a Swiss cheese fan, so I substituted provolone. However, right before adding the provolone, while still in skillet, I added 4oz of Philadelphia cream cheese to it. After mixing it in, I covered it with the cheese, reduced the heat slightly and covered the skillet to let the cheese melt (I try to keep from heating up the kitchen during the summer). This was awesome! One of the few dishes that every member of my family will eat!! Thanks for the recipe!
