DIY Baby Powder {Talc Free}

Why Talc Free?

I’m going to be perfectly honest. I’m still learning daily about natural health and natural living. What I enjoy doing is learning and then being able to share what I learn with you.

So I started thinking about baby powder. I don’t use baby powder on my babies. I have a small travel sized bottle I will sometimes use between washing my hair if my hair looks oily.

DIY Baby Powder

I remembered reading several “Talc Free” recipes for baby powder. So I wanted to ask the questions:

What is Talc? And Why should I avoid it?

Let’s start with the first question:

What is Talc?

From Wikipedia:Talc is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or Mg3Si4O10(OH)2.

Whoa, okay that’s a lot of chemistry that my husband would know more about than me.

Why should I avoid it?

Even from one search, I found links to cancer and Talc. Usually Talc is linked to ovarian cancer and lung cancer.

Talc used to contain asbestos, but has been free of asbestos since the 1970’s.

From Praireland Herbs:

Talc is a mineral, produced by the mining of talc rocks and then
processed by crushing, drying and milling. Processing eliminates a
number of trace minerals from the talc, but does not separate minute
fibers which are very similar to asbestos.

From Cancer.Org:

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Its major goal is to identify causes of cancer.

  • IARC classifies talc that contains asbestos as “carcinogenic to humans”.
  • Based on the lack of data from human studies and on limited data in lab animal studies, IARC classifies talc not containing asbestos as “not classifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans”.
  • Based on limited evidence from human studies, IARC classifies the perineal (genital) use of talc-based body powder as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”.

That last statement is enough for me to at least choose to avoid using Talc if I can. So what are our other options?

Did you know you can make these powders at home?

Homemade Talc Free Baby Powder

Supplies:

1/2 cup corn starch

1/2 cup Arrowroot powder

1 drop Eucalyptus essential oil

1-2 drops Lavender essential oil

1/4 cup finely ground oats (I use my Ninja with the 16 oz container)

I buy Arrowroot on Amazon or at my local market in the health food aisle.

Directions: Mix all the ingredients well and put in a shaker.

I bought these cool metal shakers online. You could just use a simple salt shaker from the dollar store or an empty baby powder container.

Have you made your own baby powder before? What are your thoughts?

  3. What about cornstarch coming from a genetically modified source. I stay away from corn because of the methods being used to grown it in the US.

  4. I knew about talc but I found another harmful ingredient in body powder, Tricalcium phosphate, which also can cause cancer. They take out one thing and add another just as harmful.
