Why I support Home Based Businesses

Can I be honest…

Okay, thanks.

I used to avoid buying from home based businesses (many of which were MLM’s as I would call them). I didn’t understand them… and what I was exposed to was lots and lots of really bad marketing that did more to turn me off than to get me interested.

This is so bad… but I remember there was a product I was interested in… and I searched for a way to order it so I wouldn’t have to order it through an MLM company. I also have to add that I’m a huge introvert and honestly try to avoid going to any party lol read more

Foods That Cleanse

When people message me wanting to lose weight or start eating healthier, I always recommend for them to get a jump-start o a new way of eating with a short “cleanse.” This will help them eliminate cravings, clear out the digestive system, and prepare for a new healthier way of eating.

What are some signs that you may need to cleanse or detox?

  • Bloated
  • Fatigue/Sluggish
  • Cravings
  • Headaches
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Acne
  • Insomnia
  • Moodiness
  • Constipated

Do you have any of these symptoms? By adding these foods into your diet, they can help your body cleanse and get the best results while your body adjusts to your new way of eating.

What are some of the best foods for cleansing?

Aloe Vera

I don’t know about you, but I only knew about Aloe Vera from getting burned as a kid, haha. With a little research I learned that it is a very powerful and healing food! Aloe Vera is said to have the ability to help you maintain youthful beauty and a healthy glow. Sounds like the perfect plant to me! But there are many, many benefits to Aloe Vera to help your health in general.

Aloe vera juice is one of nature’s most effective cleansers due to the high amount of amino acids, vitamins and minerals. It is powerful in helping the body get rid of any waste and help to detox naturally.  Read more

Aloe vera is also packed full of immune-boosting polysaccharides, vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folic acid. Plus, It’s also rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, selenium and potassium.

Because not all of us eat aloe vera often, I wanted to know some popular foods that could help us too!

Popular foods that cleanse

    Make At Home Insect Repellent

    I LOVE SUMMERTIME!

Extra time with out of town family, swimming, biking, and lighting bugs, what’s not to like?!?!

    Mosquitoes, that’s what!

Adam (and Aidalyn to a degree) have really bad reactions to insect bites and stings. It really can be an issue during the summer when you want to be having picnics, playing outside and having fun! Because the quickest way to ruin a picnic or fireworks is BUGS!!

So I went hunting for a simple and naturally based insect repellent that I could feel GOOD about having around my kids.

While were celebrating Independence Day last month I did some experimentation, and here is a simple recipe you can make at home to repel the bugs from your outside gatherings!

    1. What you need:

         2. Then follow these simple steps!

  • Add the oils and water to your mason jar.
  • Gently add candle(s)
  • Place in area you want free of bugs
  • Light the candle(s)

    How to Protect Wood Tables

I’m not sure if you have seen, but we have had a very crazy year so far!

My nephew passed away unexpectedly and it really put a lot of things in perspective. We decided that we weren’t going to put off a lot of things we had been throwing around and one of those was moving closer to our family. We work from home, so we had the ability to move anywhere.

We started by selling almost everything we had in our house in Virginia. We went through everything and if we didn’t love it… we weren’t going to move it.

We took a few months to narrow down where we wanted to live… found the PERFECT house… and now are slowly filling it with our touch.

As I’m writing this… we are almost done with the new paint and we just installed our new lighting.

Because we didn’t move hardly anything with us, we had a lot of fun going shopping for some new pieces of furniture!

I was shopping for a new Dining Room table and Kitchen Table. With all the different styles, I finally decided I wanted in the Kitchen was a round pedestal table… and I found one that was so perfect!!!

It is by Paula Deen, and I think it was perfect for the style I was going for.

    Now… I have Kids. O.o

Probably one hour after having my brand new table delivered… it had a scratch on it. I was so upset.

Luckily, my in laws were in town (they are seriously the original Fixer Uppers!) and they gave me this awesome tip to help protect my table and help fill in the scratch too. It was so simple I just knew I had to share it with you guys!

So here is everything you need to repair your scratches and help prevent any new scratches from occurring: read more

    Can you work from anywhere?

Author’s Note: I’m excited to have a guest post from my husband Adam Parker today! I think he has another perspective on how we built our business since we was working outside the home when we first got started. Enjoy!

A few years ago I read a blog about working from home. It was about this guy who built a business where he was able to travel around the world and and still “show up for work”. For the life of me, I can’t find that blog post, I wish I could and thank that blogger.

When I read it, I was working full time as an Engineer with VERY limited vacation options. Although I liked my job (but didn’t love it) I really desired to be free to travel places, to show my girls the world around them, and experience it all! I didn’t want to wait until I was 65 and on a pension before I had the freedom to go places when I wanted to go!

That really spoke to me, could we really do that? See all these places we wanted to go, and still build a business?

So we made that our goal, to build a business not limited by what area of town we lived in, how much money we had to put into a building, or any other of the typical limitations. That spoke to me in so many ways.

This wasn’t something that we could build overnight. We knew it was going to take time, but we were excited to work on that goal and dream of our future freedom together.

Now that we have that freedom, what did it take and what were the steps to get there?

    Kids in Philadelphia, PA

    We started an online business.

About two years ago, we did something completely crazy. We started a home based business with a global online store. With no background in business or marketing we started building this business and learning as we went.

We jumped in head first and really didn’t look back. We spent any free time we did have working on our business and working to build it up from scratch. We personally used the power of social media. We liked it because that was where all our friends were hanging out anyways (Facebook is the new mall.) Plus, we always had our phones or iPads with us to be able to work from anywhere.

    We set Big Goals

We didn’t just start a business with no clear path in mind… we started a business with a clear goal that we wanted to reach. We were determined and tenacious with our goal and I think that was one factor in actually reaching it.

Our goal was to be able to make enough for both of us to work our home based business full time and have complete freedom of our time and location.

    We learned what we needed

I think one thing that was crucial for us was that both of us are lifelong learners. We love a challenge and we love learning new skills. Owning a business wasn’t something we had ever done before, so it was important to invest in ourselves to learn new skills and how to actually build an online business.

    How is this possible?

    1) We do require WiFi… so we usually check before hand if WiFi is available.

We say with WiFi and a Dream, anything is possible.

    2) We like to travel, so many of our trips include visiting our team members and bringing the girls with us.

    3) The home business we chose isn’t a “party” based business (i.e. private home product showings), so that allows us to design our business the way we want. If that means talking over social media, or making a phone call to talk – anything is possible as long as you have your phone and computer with you.

    4) Our main goal is connect with customers and help them reach their goals – Many people are familiar with ordering online and we just make recommendations to help them with their choices as they are looking for solutions to their problems.

If you could work from anywhere, where would your office be?

Why a Dream Board is So Critical to Your Long Term Success!

Let’s be honest, when I first had someone tell me to “Make a Dream Board” I kind of dismissed it as a waste of time that would be better used trying to accomplish my goals, just not put them on a board of some kind.

I expect many of you may have the same reaction to that advise, I find people of action often feel that way!

That’s one reason I say to you now, in spite of all those feelings, creating a Dream Board was one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had dealing with goals, and I truly believe it made a difference in my long term success!

So what is a Dream Board?

In simple terms, a Dream Board is a visual representation of your long term desires and wishes. That’s quite different from a goal sheet, or even a list of things you would like to accomplish.

I’ve seen many different types of Dream Boards work for all kinds of people. Some of the most effective included:

  • Posterboard and Magazine Photo Collage: This method is tried and true and works for almost anyone!
  • Digital Board: This is getting more popular in the “paperless” crowds. You still use images, but you can also add music, sound effects, etc.
  • Pinboard Design: Using a corkboard allows you an easy way to add and adjust your dream board easily (one of my favorites!)

How to Have a Stress-Free Wedding

When Adam and I were married (12 years ago on this May 28th), I was 19 and he was 21 O.o

    We were in love <3

    wedding day

We met when I was a junior in high school and he was a sophomore in college. We started dating and one year later (right after I graduated from high school) we were engaged.

I’m sure from the outside… we looked CRAZY!!

We had about 11 months to plan our wedding and it was still the most stressful thing for me.

I already shared about it raining on our wedding day, so obviously even with all the planning you can’t control everything!

I WISHED that I had known some ways to stay calm and reduce the stress of planning that big day.

    wedding day

    Yoga

When I get stressed now, I do a few yoga stretches and deep breathing. That practice helps me to calm all those racing thoughts and helps me focus on what I need to accomplish right now.

There are apps for your phone you can download to coach you through different relaxing stretches or you can do a search for a good routine. That way you can stop and do some stretches at any point when  you feel that stressful tension come over you.

    Plan

I am a planner at heart… and I know that some people who are not may get MORE stressed out with a plan. I like to have a super short list to follow – maybe 3-6 things you need to accomplish the next day.

The night before, write down your 3-6 action steps for the next day. When you wake up, you know EXACTLY what you need to focus on. Plus, you can feel accomplished at the end of the day when you can mark everything off your list. Smaller lists keeps your stress levels down and checking things off is the best feeling ever.

I also bought a few wedding planner books online to help stay organized as we booked everything for the big day. It also was a place to keep ideas that I wanted to refer to when talking to the different services I was hiring.

    Hire help

If you can afford a wedding planner, Do it. You can give them general ideas for what you want to experience on the big day… and then they can do some of the harder jobs like calling venues and providers. Sometimes a close friend who has great connections or someone who just got married can be a great asset.

My mom was amazing for helping me plan our wedding. She knew so much from helping plan my sister’s wedding (and even learned some what not to do’s as well). Even though she wasn’t “hired, ” she was an amazing partner.

    Laugh

Remember to laugh along the way. Your marriage is super important – and you should take that seriously, but don’t forget that you don’t have to take yourself too seriously.

Laugh when you have bumps along the way in your wedding planning… which everyone has! Laugh when things don’t go perfectly – because they won’t!

    Take care of you

Stay active (goes along with Yoga) but exercise in general is a great way to reduce stress. Make it a way to connect with your future spouse. Go hiking, bike riding, take up a sport, go on a walk – use this time to connect on a different level.

Don’t forget to Pamper yourself. Book a day at the spa to treat yourself and get a massage. I carry so much tension in my shoulders and back, so it is on  my must do list when I have a lot of stressful events in  my life.

How To Work With Your Spouse (And NOT Kill Them!)

As you may or may not know, Adam and I had very separate careers for the first 10 years of our marriage. I was working on completing my masters in Speech Therapy and working in various healthcare environments, and Adam was a Chemical Engineer who worked in several different manufacturing environments.

It seems like for most couples, that’s how it is. The husband has his work, the wife has her work (or maybe 1 of them is a stay at home parent), and although they share their lives together, they rarely share their “professional” lives in a significant way.

That all changed for us when we started our home based business, and eventually became a stay at home family, building our business together, raising our girls together, and basically being together A LOT more than we ever did before.

After being full time at home together for over 8 months at this point, here are our top 5 tips for working well together as a couple!

How to Work with your spouse

    Lean Into Each Other’s Strengths

Adam is a big a data nerd, he loves spreadsheets, reports, and tracking everything. I HATE THIS STUFF, I can’t even listen to him talk about (I get all glassy eyed and stare into space). Conversely, I love photography, writing, as well as natural health (why we started this whole thing to begin with!). Adam enjoys my pictures, but doesn’t enjoy taking them the way I do.

And you know what, that’s a good thing!! We aren’t the same, and our business really thrives when we are able to leverage our personal strengths to make each other better, and not try to make each other the same. Opposites attract they say, and I find it’s true!

Take Your Work Seriously, but Don’t Take Yourself Seriously

Really now, have fun! You married your spouse because you do like being with them. What you devote your time to is very important, take it seriously, but don’t fall into the trap of taking YOURSELF too seriously. Sometimes you need to be able to laugh at each other (and yourself) and enjoy the lighter sides of life!

How to Work with your spouse

    Take Some Time for Yourself

That old adage of having a date night is perhaps more important when you also work together. Having some time away from your business and the rest of your life is incredibly helpful to your mental health and energy levels. And ideally this is both for you as a couple (Dates, Lunches out, Walks together) and you as an individual (Relaxing with a book, Girls night out, Go on a Run, go to a Spa, etc). Adam & I enjoy having a gym membership with childcare, so we can exercise and enjoy some conversation over a cool down, 🙂

We LOVE what we do, and there’s a risk of workaholism when you love what you do and do it with people you love, so we find we have to be intentional about this!

    Show a LOT of Grace

If we have learned one thing, is that just like in your marriage generally, you MUST give LOTS of grace to your spouse. You are both going to irritate each other, even in the best of times. You married each other because you loved each other and wanted to be together, not because you were exactly alike. So when you feel that irritation or anger come up because of your spouse’s behavior, try to step back, take a breath, and give even more grace to the person in your life you have the greatest connection with!

How to Work with your spouse

    And Finally….

    Brunch (With Coffee)

When you work together, breakfast meetings tend to become brunch meetings. Enjoy them with a cup of hot coffee and some dreaming about the future, 🙂  I don’t know anything that has energized us more than some slow mornings enjoying time together, dreaming about the future, and cherishing the process.

If you have worked with your spouse or significant other on a business, project, committee, etc, what are your best tips to make it work?

P.S. – One of our awesome Instagram Followers @PreppyandPetite suggests “Be Open Minded” when your boyfriend or spouse tries to give suggestions (in this case designing jewelry). Great Advise!!
