What is Plunking for Curly Hair?

“Plunking” is a technique used by people with curly hair to help enhance their natural curl pattern and reduce frizz. It involves gently placing wet or damp hair onto a cloth or t-shirt and wrapping it around the head to encourage the curls to form and set in place as the hair dries.

Here’s how to plunk curly hair:

  1. Start with freshly washed hair. Apply your preferred leave-in conditioner or styling product to wet or damp hair to help define and hydrate the curls.
  2. Lay a soft, absorbent cloth or a cotton t-shirt on a flat surface. The cloth should be large enough to wrap around your head comfortably.
  3. Lean forward and lower your hair onto the cloth, allowing your curls to naturally fall onto the fabric.
  4. Use the cloth to gently scrunch and gather your hair towards the scalp, encouraging the curls to form and clump together.
  5. Once all the hair is gathered onto the cloth, wrap the cloth around your head, securing it in place with the ends tied or tucked.
  6. Allow your hair to air dry while it’s wrapped in the cloth. You can leave it wrapped for as long as needed, depending on how long it takes for your hair to dry completely.
  7. Once your hair is dry, gently unwrap the cloth and release your curls. You should notice more defined, bouncy curls with reduced frizz.

Plunking is particularly popular among those with curly or wavy hair who follow the Curly Girl Method, a hair care approach that emphasizes using sulfate-free, silicone-free products and techniques to enhance natural curls and minimize damage.
