Homemade Bird Feeder

Easy Homemade Bird Feeder

Making bird feeders is a great winter activity for your kids. It is win-win for everyone. Your kids get to have fun making a craft, and the birds get to have some food when the pickin’s are thin in the wintertime. This is an easy homemade bird feeder to make with toddlers and preschoolers using only two items.

This activity was first shown to us when we visited our local Botanical Gardens for their light display around Christmas. They made ornaments to hang on a tree in their children’s garden using pipe cleaners and Cheerios. Aidalyn loved making the homemade bird feeder so much, I knew we would need to make them for our house. read more

Natural Cleaning with Just Water

Natural Cleaning with Just Water

Safe Cleaning with E-Cloths

Let me start off by saying that I hate cleaning.

I love a clean house, I just don’t like cleaning. If I can find a product that simplifies my cleaning routine and is all natural, I’m sold.

I first heard about these cloths that are able to clean with just water from a friend. These cloths contain fibers of silver that are anti-bacterial and anti-microbial.  As you clean with e-cloths, the microfibers collect all the bacteria and germs off the surface . Then, they are able to clean themselves in just a few hours, killing all the bacteria trapped inside. You can use the same cloth for a week without needing to clean it. Less laundry? Again… this product was screaming my name.

I watched a few you tube videos of moms using these cloths and testing how effective they are with killing bacteria and cleaning. Several videos used a protein swab to show how the ecloth was able to clean raw meat juices from a plate, leaving no trace of proteins behind… with just water!

Click to Watch the You-Tube video here about E-Cloth.

This video shows you how good e-cloth is at removing the protein from the surfaces with just water and your e-cloth.

I’m a mom and I am concerned about my two girls being around harsh chemical cleaners. I was making my own cleaners for a while with vinegar, baking soda, and ammonia. This is so much easier! I even was able to use the cloth on my swiffer that I already had to clean the floors.

Annaleigh is just about to start crawling (she’s at the roll to get everywhere stage). I am getting more and more aware of what is on my floor. I’m not a huge germaphobe, but I’d rather have her not eat dust bunnies for a snack either.

I bought several of the e-cloths: the shower cloths, the stainless steel cloths, scrubbing clothes, window polish cloths and the universal stone (all natural really deep cleaning cream). I cleaned my whole downstairs in just a few minutes and let Aidalyn help because there are no chemicals. I think dusting with an e-cloth will be the perfect first chore for her.

This is what I bought:

Shower pack, Stainless Steel pack, 4 general purpose cloths, 1 bathroom cloth, 2 window polishing cloths, the universal stone paste, body cloth and more.

About E-Cloths

Safe – Chemical Free Cleaning

E-cloths have 480,000 strands per cm squared. This is what allows it to clean so well and be so absorbent. It holds the Good Housekeeping Seal of approval and is recommended by Bosch, Deva, AEG, Electrolux, Miele, De Dietrich, Bristan, Siemens, Baumatic, NEFF, Franke, and Ideal Standard.

E-cloths are able to remove 99% of bacteria including E-coli and Listeria. Studies show the bacteria stays inside the cloth until it is rinsed. After it is rinsed, the e-cloths reintroduced only 0.01% of bacteria back onto the sterile surface. This shows that only water and e-cloths are needed to clean.

I used these on my very, very dirty stove. It had burnt on foods and grease spills… It works people! It cleaned it all up with just water and the e-cloth. I used the stainless steel e-cloth and then I finished with a stainless steel polish cloth.

Saves Money

E-cloths save you money because you no longer need any other products to help you clean. You can also use these in place of paper towels. You only need to wash them about once a week which can also save you money on laundry loads.

For day to day use, you just rinse the cloth under the faucet with hot water. When you are ready to wash, machine wash with detergent on high heat and a good rinse. Then hang to dry. I cloth diaper, so I wash mine using Charlies Soap. You don’t want to use bleach or fabric softener. If the cloths start losing performance, you can just boil them with water to refresh it.

Good for the Environment

No more harsh chemicals, toxins, or fumes being released into the environment. This is great for all houses, but is very important for families with kids. Your babies and kids don’t need be exposed to all the chemicals that are in most cleaning products. When moms clean, the kids are usually not far away. This eliminates the concern about exposing kids to all the bad ingredients in harsh cleaners. It is also safe that they can join on in and help.

Real Simple Magazine choose E-Cloths for Best Product in 3 Cleaning Categories.

E-cloth’s scrubber won for best scrubber. Having both a gentle abrasive side for scrubbing and a microfiber side for wiping. It also is curved so it naturally fits in your hand better.

E-cloth’s microfiber cleaning cloths won for best all around. It was the best at collecting dust, best at cleaning with just water, and best to stand up in the washing machine. They are guaranteed to last up to 300 washes (just remember no bleach, fabric softeners, or dryer sheets).

E-cloth’s mop won for best washable mop. The mop has a large head that can turn in a 360 degree motion. Just use with plain water to clean your floors. You then can toss the microfiber head into the washer when done.

These were the perfect cleaning solution I was looking for. You can buy your e-cloths here and start cleaning with just water (affiliate link):

3 Trim and Healthy Chicken Nugget Recipes

Chicken Nuggets are such a staple in most kid’s diets (and some adults too!). We love the taste of fried chicken in little tasty bites… But all too frequently American’s feel trapped into getting fast food Chicken Nuggets.

We know that McDonald’s isn’t health food, but we expect to be eating only fried chicken and breading when you order their chicken nuggets.

It can’t be too bad, right?

Natural News.com released a forensic investigation to find out what was in McDonald’s chicken nuggets. The chicken nuggets that were inspected were from a McDonald’s located in Austin. Tx.

The investigators found several items in the chicken nuggets that were not chicken or breading!

1) Dark black hair like structures

Where did these come from since chickens don’t have hair?

2)  Red Splotches

3) Spherical green object resembling algea

To see the pictures and video more closely, follow this link.

This is just one reminder that we do not want to be eating this processed food. Chicken nuggets are far from the natural source of a chicken.

Thankfully we don’t have to throw out the chicken nuggets with the bath water.

There is an answer.

Why You Should Add Butter to Your Coffee

Week one we increased our water intake.

Week two we cut out sugar.

Are you feeling better already?

No more Sugar crashes or highs? We want to keep our blood sugar smooth and stable.

This next tip will help not only keep your sugar cravings at bay, but will also help you burn more fat, fuel your body and help you focus…

Want to know the secret??

Adapted from: http://glutendoctors.blogspot.com/2010/10/why-i-allow-butter-on-diary-free-diet.html

This week we are going to focus on Healthy Fats!

Fats from animal and vegetables are so vital to our health. They are a “concentrated source of energy.” (Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon). Using fats as an energy source is also understood in Trim Healthy Mama‘s satisfying or S meals.

Fats slow down nutrient absorption so we feel full longer and stay satisfied. They also help keep our blood sugar stable. Fats are also important in absorption of fat soluble vitamins (A, D E and K). Cultures (Japanese, French and traditional populations) that eat a lot of saturated fats have less coronary heart disease than Americans who changed their diets to be low in saturated fat (Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon).

What Is a Healthy Fat?

Saturated fats are healthy! Healthy fats are fats that are stable when heated. These include coconut oil, butter, and ghee. Extra Virgin Olive oil is good, but it is less stable because it is monounsaturated and so shouldn’t be cooked with.

Eating Fat doesn’t make us fat, Carbs do!

We have been lied to over and over when we have been told to eat low fat for weight loss. It isn’t the fat that is the problem, it is the carbs that cause excess weight gain (and the mixture of the two). Trim Healthy Mama goes into more detail about this in their book, but it is the core at why you keep the two sources of energy separate and also eat low glycemic.

When you eat too many carbs, the excess energy is stored in our cells to burn up later. When we also eat fat with excess carbs, the fat is also stored for later. If we keep our food choices to one source of energy or the other then we will continue to burn and not store extra to be turned into fat.

What about cholesterol?

Cholesterol is NOT the devil. It is actually necessary for your health.

Cholesterol is vital for hormone production, for cell membranes, for creating bile, for serotonin production, and maintaining a healthy digestive wall for prevention of a leaky gut.

Oils to avoid.

Any oil that has been hydrogenated or homogenized. Most of these are in the form of corn or soy. So if you start avoiding those two then it gets easier. Polyunsaturated fats should be no greater than 4% of our daily caloric intake (Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon). Polyunsaturated fats include commercial vegetable oils like corn, sunflower and safflower.

Coconut is a super food!

In an earlier post, I talked about coconut oil and how great it is for us (click here to read more about coconut oil). Coconut oil is antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing for skin and revs up metabolism. We keep one container in our bathroom and one in the kitchen. I have used coconut oil on sunburns, dry skin and for prevention of stretch marks in pregnancy.

Challenge Time!

So this week, let’s make the switch to include MORE saturated fats into our diet. We most commonly use coconut oil and butter. One easy way to get in more fats is actually in your coffee! Sounds a little strange, right?

When you combine coffee, grassfed butter and collagen, you get AMAZING RESULTS!

4 Reasons to Cut out the Sugar

4 Reasons to Cut the Sugar
4 Reasons to Cut the Sugar

We are going to focus on Cutting out the Sugar!

This is not a new idea. Lots of popular diets have come to the conclusion that our sugar is out of balance in our Modern diet and this is the cause of our expanding waistbands.

Management of your Sugar and Carbohydrates is crucial for weight loss and your general health.

We know sugar is so important to get under control.

A low glycemic diet in general is healthier than a diet focused on lots of carbs. When our system gets overloaded with too many sugar and carbs, our cells start storing extra carbs as fat in our cells.

Our cells love to store carbs, so they are very eager and ready when we over eat our carbs. If we eat a moderate or low carb diet, then we can burn those carbs before they get the chance to be stored as extra fat. read more

Story of a Stay at Home Mom

Story of a Stay at Home Mom

If a mom pours a cup of coffee,
Then the toddler will ask for eggs.
You make her eggs and cheese, but then she decides she would rather have oatmeal and pineapple.

You decide to not fight about it because eggs sound good to you… With your coffee – that is cold now. So you put it in the microwave.

Just as you sit down with your eggs and coffee, the baby wakes up and needs to be changed and fed.

You run upstairs, change baby, come back downstairs and sit to nurse. Feeling hungry and thirsty now because nursing does that…

You put the baby in Exersaucer, put on PBS for toddler.

Sigh. Your coffee is cold. Put it back in microwave along with eggs.

Sit down with hot coffee and eggs. Eat one bite.

Toddler wants her snack… You fix an almond butter sandwich… Licking your fingers for a taste of food.

Toddler wants to play a game. ‘Let’s play tea party.’ Where she will pour you a cup of imaginary… Coffee.
