Top Toys for 6 Month Olds

Everyone always is asking what to buy for their baby’s birthday or special occasions. Sometimes it is hard to know what are the best toys out there for different developmental ages. Right now Annaleigh is 8 months old and so much fun. At 6 months, she just starting to really have fun and play. It was a whole new world for her to explore! We have tested out these toys. I wanted to share her favorite ones.

Here are my top picks toys for 6 month olds:

1) Exersaucer

Annaleigh loves that she can sit up and play in her exersaucer. She enjoys being about to look around the room and watch Aidalyn run around. The exersaucer also gives her a chance to use her newly developed head control and work towards sitting up by strengthening her core muscles. read more

10 Surprising Uses for Greek Yogurt

Have you met my friend Greek Yogurt yet? No. Well, then you are in for a treat! Greek Yogurt is one of the most versatile foods.

Greek Yogurt is strained yogurt leaving a protein packed, thick and rich dairy left. It is very different in texture than regular yogurt. It is rich and creamy… so good!

It is also healthy, because a good quality Greek yogurt will contain strains of beneficial bacteria that helps with your digestion. Since Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt, it helps keep you full longer and keep blood sugar levels stable. It is also lower in lactose, so it has fewer carbs. read more

How to Lose in Marriage

How to Lose in Marriage

Losing in marriage isn’t really talked about very often. No one wants to lose the argument or put others first. This is something that I have to make a choice to follow through daily. We are currently going through a series at Journey Christian church  by Andy Stanley called “Staying in Love.” The general premise is that “falling” in love is easy, staying in love is much harder.

Make Love a Verb

Love can be a noun or a verb. For a marriage to last, love has to become active as a verb. I shared previously 30 ways to serve your spouse which is a great way to start putting love into action.  read more

Moss and Magnolia Jewelry Giveaway

Moss and Magnolia Jewelry Giveaway

I have the pleasure of bringing you this beautifully crafted giveaway today from Tricia at Moss and Magnolia. Tricia is a very talented individual. She makes these beautiful pieces of jewelry from her home. Tricia lives in Louisiana where she is a mom of  three beautiful kids. She is passionate about natural parenting. She is one of the four leaders for her local La Leche chapter which supports and encourages moms who are breastfeeding.   Tricia stays busy home schooling her four kids.  She is also active and severs at her local church.

One thing I really love about Moss and Magnolia is how everything can be customized down to each detail. When I was pregnant with Annaleigh, my family was 1000 miles away. Her pregnancy was really hard (and the end was especially hard when we were out of our house for 8 weeks due to water damage). I wanted something to give to my family, so that they would remember to say a prayer for us as we got closer to delivery (boy did we need it).

I called Tricia to make me custom bracelets with “Favored Grace” stamped on them. “Favored Grace” is the meaning of Annaleigh. It was the perfect reminder for my family to keep us in their prayers. I was able to pick out the size and color of the bracelets. They were perfect. Tricia even made Aidalyn a special “Big Sister” bracelet just for her.

If you have any idea or jewelry creation in mind, I’m sure Tricia will be able to help you fashion your favorite custom piece. Here are some examples of my favorite pieces of hers.

6 Ways to Save Money on Valentine’s Day

6 Ways to Save Money on Valentine's DayWays to Save Money on Valentine’s Day

Here are 6 Ways to Save Money this Valentine’s Day without feeling like a cheapskate. Valentine’s Day is not one of my favorite holidays… but it is never a bad thing to recognize the ones you love and let them know in some special way. When you are trying to save money, sometimes you feel pressure to spend more than you really should. Remember that expensive gifts don’t equal more love. You will show love to your husband more by staying on budget than a fancy new watch.

6 Ways to Save Money on Valentine’s Day

1) Split baby sitting cost with other couples.

Hire 1-2 baby sitters to watch several kids at one house. Let them have a pizza and movie night while all the parents get to go out on date. Leave craft supplies for older kids to work on their own Valentine’s day cards to keep them busy.

2) Find free things to do in your town.

We have an art museum here in Richmond that is free every day to the public. It is romantic to walk around (and pretend like you are more cultured that you really are.) Most larger cites will have a website that list free ideas to do in town. One idea is to go to a local park and walk hand in hand depending on weather. Go to a nice shopping center and window shop.

3) Go out to lunch instead of dinner read more

Trim Healthy Mama on a Whole Foods Diet

There is some criticism in the whole foods world about Trim Healthy Mama. I’d like to take the time to debunk the myth that Trim Healthy Mama can’t be included in a whole food’s lifestyle.

What is Trim Healthy Mama?

The Trim Healthy Mama (THM) diet is a lifestyle approach to eating developed by sisters Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison. It is based on the premise of separating fuels, where meals are designed to focus on either carbohydrates or fats, but not both together, to optimize metabolism and promote weight loss. read more

Why Low Calorie Diets Don’t Work

Watch Why Low Calorie Diets Don’t Work:

So many women decide it’s time to lose weight at the beginning of the new year.

It’s time for a change, time to take charge of their over eating. Maybe they will even decide to start exercising too.

Sadly though, many women decide to succumb to very strict low calorie diets thinking they are the key to losing weight.

A low calorie diet for a women would be eating less than 1500 calories in a day. Very low calorie diets recommend 800 calories in a day. Pass the celery!

Low Calorie Diets Do More Harm than Good

Everyone has to eat enough calories each day just to keep their body functioning: to breathe, to digest their food, to keep organs working. This number of calories is called a Basal Metabolic Rate. You can use this calculator to figure out your BMR here.

If you eat below this personal BMR, your body will start to turn on itself and eat lean muscle mass to function.

Lean muscle mass is exactly what we want, though. This is what fires up our metabolism to burn more calories, keeps us strong, toned and prevents injury.

Low Calorie Diets Do Not Work Long Term

You may start a low calorie diet, tracking your food intake and eating less to find that you have lost 3-5 pounds the first 2 weeks or so. Don’t be fooled by this weight loss. Part of this decrease is a decrease of food in your system (or bowels). Secondly, you could also just be losing water weight.

This kind of weight loss is not sustainable and will eventually stall… and pretty fast honestly.

Your body will catch on that you aren’t eating as much and will dial your metabolism knob back to adjust to functioning on less calories. Additionally, you will get hungry and cheat… but now your body will go into storage mode immediately because it has been starving for more nutrition.

And be honest with yourself…. you will cheat on a low calorie diet.

weight loss, healthy weight loss plan. healthy lifestyle, losing weight naturally,

What’s the Answer?

Low calorie diets are not the answer. A better approach is to eat for health while fueling your metabolism.

Eat more Thermogenic Foods.

One way to do this is to increase foods that boost your metabolism. Some of these include: coconut oil, eating hot peppers and chilies, and drinking green or oolong tea. Eating more low calorie vegetables burn calories just by chewing and digesting them. You can also try this supplement that I love to speed up my metabolism using thermogenics.

Eat more often. read more

Why You Need More Salt!

New You New Years: Changing Your Salt

Why You Need More Salt

Salt is often touted at something we all need to reduce in our diets. High salt consumption is blamed for a whole host of diseases like hypertension and heart disease. But new research shows that this isn’t the case! Salt is really a healthy food for our diets and is essential for our bodies! Along with other trace minerals like magnesium, salt contains sodium and chloride which are necessary for our body.

Natural salt is not something new to our dietsSalt is mentioned in the bible nearly 50 times!  In traditional cultures salt was used to preserve food and could even be used as currency.  Salt is still as important now as it was then.

How Salt Works in our Body

Salt is a main component of blood plasma, amniotic fluid, lymphatic fluid and extra cellular fluid. It carries nutrients in and out of our cells. Salt is needed for firing the neurons in our brains and helps with creative thinking. It also helps maintain proper blood pressure and supports your adrenal glands (most adults are experiencing adrenal fatigue).

Salt is also important to help us digest our food. It helps in the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It also activates amylase which helps break down starches.

New evidence shows that salt may not even cause heart disease.  There was actually data showing that a low salt diet increased your likelihood of dying. The study showed the least likely to die were people having high salt in their diets. Interesting!

7 Habits that are Killing your Metabolism

7 Habits that are Killing your Metabolism

Salt is needed for proper adrenal function

Adrenal Fatigue is so common these days. Feeling sluggish, not able to get out of bed in the mornings, dealing with insomnia, craving salt? You may have adrenal fatigue. One way to combat adrenal fatigue is to feed your adrenal glands with sea salt! Your body naturally wants to heal itself with a salty craving – so feed it wisely.

Pantothenic AcidYou shouldn’t have to restrict salt when it comes form good, quality sources. My naturopath recommended that we increase our salt to a 1/2 teaspoon at each meal. She recommended this salt: Finely Ground Pure Himalayan Salt (Affiliate link)

Why My 3 Year old is Not Potty Trained, and Why I’m Okay with That

potty training, potty training regression, preschooler not potty trained,

Why My 3 Year old is Not Potty Trained, and Why I’m Okay with That

Potty training is a huge topic among moms of preschoolers. How did you potty train? How long did it take to potty train? Did you do it cold turkey? What did you do about nights?

We actually did start potty training Aidalyn around 26 months old. I was pregnant with our second and was motivated to not have two in diapers at the same time. Potty training while being pregnant was not fun. We did the 3 day potty training boot camp. She was excited about big girl panties. She was excited about getting stickers and chocolate.

Aidalyn did great during the day. She was showing really great progress for about 3 months. We still had accidents during the night (never once was dry in the morning and rarely was dry after a nap). We were never “completely” potty trained. We could leave the house and stay dry, though. We thought we were on the right track.

Then the rains came down (literately).

Our house flooded from an upstairs toilet over-flowing… I was 35 weeks pregnant. (You can read the story here) We had to move out of our house for about 3 months. During this time, I gave birth to my second daughter (read her home birth story here).

This whole series of events was too much for a 2.5 year old. We spent one month in a hotel room, one month in a rental house, and 3 weeks in Louisiana with my parents while our house was being worked on.

The Regression

Aidalyn started acting out in the hotel room. She was drawing on the walls and sheets with crayons ( she had never shown any sort of rebellion like this before). She also started crying about having to use the potty. She basically refused to use her potty or the hotel’s potty. She also had to start sleeping with the light on at night.

Using the potty got a little better once we moved into the rental house. We were back in big girl panties and using her little potty with lots of encouragement and rewards.

Then Annaleigh was born and that was another huge life change for a 2.5 year old.

Aidalyn’s personality is that of being a perfectionist, type A and in control. Her little world as she knew it was spinning out of control and the only thing she could control was #1 using the potty or not and #2 eating or not. We saw both of these issues expressed to the max.

We tried rewards, we tried charts… they worked for a short time. Then they stopped working.

Now she cries at the mention of using the potty. She will tell us at random times “I don’t want to use the potty.” She also says that the potty is scary.

I’m not saying that I don’t believe your 3 year old should be potty trained. I am saying I’m okay with my 3 year old not being potty trained.

parenting, potty training, stress and kids, dealing with kid's emtions

Adam and I are both over achievers and like to put success on reaching goals.

When it comes to our children and their development…

It isn’t a race.

It isn’t something to brag about.

These are little people who need to be respected and given their own time to progress and grow.

Every child is different, despite the charts and graphs you always see.

Our job as parents is to help build the scaffolding to ease them into the next phase of growth.

I think that we would have been potty trained already if all the other crisis didn’t happen during the time of that developing skill. Who knows.

Right now, I’m focusing on changing Aidalyn’s inner voice. I keep reminding her that “The potty isn’t scary.” “Big girls use the potty.” “When you are ready, you let mommy know and we will use the potty together.”

I am going to be ready for her to show me that she is ready. I will help her as she gets over her fear of using the potty. Once that happens, I will be there to support and encourage her. But for now, I am waiting.

So to the mom who’s 3 year old isn’t potty trained, the mom who’s 6 month won’t sleep through the night, the five year old who isn’t reading novels: read more
