When I started learning more about natural ways to boost my metabolism, I learned there are actually signs of a slow metabolism! It is good to know if you have a healthy metabolism or not by knowing these signs:
Are you always Freezing? What’s Your Metabolism Telling You?
I used to be cold All.The.Time. My hands and feet would be freezing and ice to the touch. I would have to carry a sweater around with me even in the summer because I couldn’t tolerate the cold in restaurants. This is not a healthy sign. What’s your metabolism telling you?
What is your metabolism?
Your metabolism is your inner fuel burner. It is a pretty smart mechanism that will adjust based on how much it needs to burn or if it needs to reserve energy. When you are eating the right about of calories and nutrients, your metabolism will be a fire house. However, if you start to reduce your calories or eat low nutrient foods, your metabolism will dial back and slow down. Think about a bear going into hibernation. The bear’s metabolism slows way down to conserve all the energy to make it through the winter. We don’t want to be a bear in hibernation.read more

There is some criticism in the whole foods world about Trim Healthy Mama. I’d like to take the time to debunk the myth that Trim Healthy Mama can’t be included in a whole food’s lifestyle.
What is Trim Healthy Mama?
The Trim Healthy Mama (THM) diet is a lifestyle approach to eating developed by sisters Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison. It is based on the premise of separating fuels, where meals are designed to focus on either carbohydrates or fats, but not both together, to optimize metabolism and promote weight loss.read more
So many women decide it’s time to lose weight at the beginning of the new year.
It’s time for a change, time to take charge of their over eating. Maybe they will even decide to start exercising too.
Sadly though, many women decide to succumb to very strict low calorie diets thinking they are the key to losing weight.
A low calorie diet for a women would be eating less than 1500 calories in a day. Very low calorie diets recommend 800 calories in a day. Pass the celery!
Low Calorie Diets Do More Harm than Good
Everyone has to eat enough calories each day just to keep their body functioning: to breathe, to digest their food, to keep organs working. This number of calories is called a Basal Metabolic Rate. You can use this calculator to figure out your BMR here.
If you eat below this personal BMR, your body will start to turn on itself and eat lean muscle mass to function.
Lean muscle mass is exactly what we want, though. This is what fires up our metabolism to burn more calories, keeps us strong, toned and prevents injury.
Low Calorie Diets Do Not Work Long Term
You may start a low calorie diet, tracking your food intake and eating less to find that you have lost 3-5 pounds the first 2 weeks or so. Don’t be fooled by this weight loss. Part of this decrease is a decrease of food in your system (or bowels). Secondly, you could also just be losing water weight.
This kind of weight loss is not sustainable and will eventually stall… and pretty fast honestly.
Your body will catch on that you aren’t eating as much and will dial your metabolism knob back to adjust to functioning on less calories. Additionally, you will get hungry and cheat… but now your body will go into storage mode immediately because it has been starving for more nutrition.
And be honest with yourself…. you will cheat on a low calorie diet.
What’s the Answer?
Low calorie diets are not the answer. A better approach is to eat for health while fueling your metabolism.
Eat more Thermogenic Foods.
One way to do this is to increase foods that boost your metabolism. Some of these include: coconut oil, eating hot peppers and chilies, and drinking green or oolong tea. Eating more low calorie vegetables burn calories just by chewing and digesting them. You can also try this supplement that I love to speed up my metabolism using thermogenics.
In a nutshell, Trim Healthy Mama is an eating plan that can benefit anyone who is needing to improve their health. Trim Healthy Mama focuses on nutrition and balancing of blood sugars that help you lose weight in a healthy way (or stay trim and healthy).

Glucomannan is becoming my favorite new cooking addition
I had never heard of glucomannan before reading Trim Healthy Mama. Since adding it to our pantry, I can’t believe this is such a secret! It has many health benefits too, so if you haven’t tried glucomannan yet – let this be your sign.
It is basically a thickener. It absorbs liquids without changing the flavor and without needing to be heated. It is able to turn 1 cup of liquid into a thick pudding with only using a teaspoon. This also fills you up and keeps you full longer, which can benefit people trying to lose weight. Glucomannan is fiber, so it helps keep you regular too!
It can be used to replace corn starch, flour rouxs, and xanthan gum in most recipes. It has zero carbs or calories, and add no bad aftertaste or slimy texture.
On the plus side, you don’t even have to heat it up to use it. You can whip it up in your cold smoothies and it immediately goes to work. I used it in these Asian Lettuce Wraps to thicken up the sauce.
Can Glucomannan Help with Weight loss?
In one study, participants lost an average of 5.5 pounds in eight weeks by adding one gram of glucomannan to their diet one hour before meals – with no other changes. Now that is something to get excited about! With any new supplement, you should always ask your health care provider if this is something you should try.
Where do you buy Glucomannan?
I buy my glucomannan from Amazon. You can probably find it in your local health store too. It is gaining more popularity, so it should be fairly easy to find. It also lasts forever, because most recipes don’t use a huge amount.
I don’t think my kitchen will ever be complete without having glucomannan in the cabinets.
Have you tried Glucomannan yet? What are you favorite ways to use it?
