Mom’s Famous Immune Boosting Wassail

It is no secret that we are getting closer to “Cold and Flu Season”…

There are many reasons why we may get sick more often in the winter (and some may surprise you!)

  • Less sunlight or time spent outdoors (means less Vitamin D for us)
  • We eat more sugar which naturally suppresses our immune system
  • Breathing in less fresh air (possibly spreading more germs in closed buildings)

Whatever the reasons are… I’ll just be over here sipping on some immune boosting wassail in my Christmas cup : )

When I posted on Facebook about my mom’s wassail, I got so many questions about what wassail is – which was surprising since I grew up drinking it during the fall and winter months. read more

DIY: Holiday Scented Pinecones

The best thing about fall is the holiday scents… what am I saying? The best thing about fall is EVERYTHING!!

But mama can’t be simmering a pot of apple cider on the stove every day, amiright?

and I don’t love burning candles… fires and kids sort of make me visualize this happening in my house:

Plus, you really don’t know what you are breathing in when you burn a conventional candle. Most are filled with artificial scents – and I’m just not sure I want to be breathing that in all day. read more

Your Healthy Back To School Guide!

Fall is my FAVORITE Time of Year!

Back to school is always exciting too, I always think of one of my favorite lines from “You’ve Got Mail” (even if I don’t live in New York!)

As summer days give way to fall, it’s back to school with busier schedules that can leave us with less sleep, less relaxing, and less sunshine and vitamin D. It’s no wonder your family can start to move a little slow, and even start getting sick!

Thankfully, I’ve got a simple healthy solution to help everyone stay happy and healthy in this busy time of year!

In my house, I am all about prevention – which just means to help our bodies fight before we even get sick! One of my secrets for this time of year is…. Defend.

DEFEND is a blend of several  powerful essential oils that works to put your immune system in the best possible shape. With a blend of rosemary, eucalyptus, zesty lemon, and the rich spiciness of cinnamon and clove it’s got what you need to give your system the boost it needs! (Plus, it smells like Christmas and holidays, so it is the perfect scent for your house too!)

Here’s some of my favorite ways to use it around the house and for back to school!

1 DIY Hand Sanitizer Spray:

In a 2oz glass spray bottle, mix 20 drops of Defend and distilled water and shake well. Simply use it for sanitizing surfaces around your home or at school!

Pin this for later:

2 Diffuse with DEFEND:

Sleep is your body’s time to reset and reboot. This is the perfect time to use an Essential Oil Diffuser and diffuse while you sleep (both Defend and Chill are good for this!) This will help you wake refreshed and ready to face the day!

3 Cell Phone Clean Up:

Did you know your cell phone is one of the dirtiest things you touch every day? Spritz a microfiber cloth with Defend and wipe down your phone screen at the end of the day. Simple maintenance goes so far with keeping yourself healthy!

4 Don’t Be a Germ Sponge!

Speaking of germs, that kitchen sponge isn’t as clean as you might think. In fact, studies have found that your toilet brush might be cleaner! Do you want to wash dishes with that?! If you like to use a sponge in the kitchen, keep your essential oils nearby. Dropping 3 drops into the sponge and then rinse well with warm water will go a LONG way!
My husband says having the right oil around is like a personal defensive lineman that will keep our family going!

    DIY Eucalyptus Bath Salt Recipe

Christmas is just around the corner, so I wanted to share this simple DIY Eucalyptus Bath Salt recipe that makes a great gift to give or to make for yourself.

Recently, I have learned so much about how important it is for our health to soak in a salt bath… and I know in this fast paced world sometimes a bath is just needed to relax.

For best results you want to soak for at least 20 minutes and best results would be for 40 minutes.

    Epsom Salts

We chose Epsom salts because of the extra benefits of magnesium. When I was pregnant, I developed a deficiency in magnesium and my midwife told me to start taking epsom salt baths 3x a week to help. They worked so well – I was amazed! I was having trouble sleeping and restless leg syndrome (both common in pregnancy) and the baths helped so much.

    Baking Soda

Baking soda is a very common ingredient in baking recipes… but many people don’t know it is also great for your skin too! It is a great home remedy for many common skin problems. Adding baking soda to your bath can help neutralize skin acidity and promote elimination of toxins. Soaking in baking soda can help refresh, renew and soften your dry skin which is needed during the dryer, winter months.

Minty, refreshing, and energizing, Eucalyptus Oil will fill the room with the clearing comfort you need. Eucalyptus oil benefits are due to its ability to stimulate immunity, provide antioxidant protection and improve respiratory circulation (DrAxe.com)

    4 Cups of Epsom Salts

    2 Cups of Baking Soda

15-20 Drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oils

Mix everything well and store in air tight glass containers.

When ready to use, Mix 1 cup into a warm bath and soak for at least 20 minutes.

What other oils do you think would be good in a bath salt?

3 Ways to Make Your Halloween Pumpkin Last Longer Naturally

    It’s Almost Halloween!

If your house is like most, then you are likely hitting up the pumpkin patches and picking out just the right ones to decorate your home!

Can I share a little confession?

Until this year, we had NEVER actually carved a pumpkin. Not since we were kids ourselves.

The reason why? The pumpkins always ended up rotting within a few days, and decomposing vegetables on your front porch isn’t a great way to welcome Trick or Treaters!

I really wanted to be able to extend the life of our pumpkins this year, but I didn’t want to use something expensive or a harsh chemical (knowing my girls are going to want to handle these Jack-o-Lanterns!)

So after some research and trial and error, here are our top 3 Tips for making your Halloween Pumpkin last longer Naturally!

Use a Tea Tree Oil Bath

Tea Tree Oil is a Natural Antiseptic and Antimicrobial which is GREAT for keeping your pumpkins fresh longer!

Once you have cleaned and carved your pumpkin, get a large pot or bucket to create a Tea Tree Oil Bath and submerge your pumpkin in it. I would recommend about 10 drops of the Tea Tree Essential Oil per Gallon of water for this. Simply submerge your pumpkin and let it soak overnight (about 8 hours or so). This hydrates your pumpkin and kills off the microbes that are there already.

Tea Tree oil helps pumpkins last longer

Refrigerate Your Pumpkin When Not Displayed

This seemed obvious to us in retrospect, but we never tried it! Simply putting your pumpkin in your refrigerator in the evenings before bed (or even during the day if you want to make it last even longer!)

You definitely want to get to enjoy it, but if you aren’t outside and aren’t enjoying it, stick it in the fridge!

Make a Natural Tea Tree Oil Spray

Once you have decorated and made your Jack o Lantern ready to roll, make a Tea Tree Oil Spray that you can use to coat the inside and outside of the pumpkin routinely to keep it fresh! I would recommend about 3 drops of oil per 2 cups of water in a glass spray bottle.

Note: Essential Oils stay fresh longer in a dark colored glass bottle. This will keep your essential oils from breaking down due to sunlight or contamination from typical plastic bottles. I really love this pack since it even comes with some cute labels!

Again, using this spray will keep your pumpkin hydrated while the oil will act as your antimicrobial agent.

I hope these tips help you have a happier and healthier Halloween this year, Enjoy it!

    DIY Multi Purpose Cleaner

When I became I mom, I started doing a lot of research about how to clean my house without chemicals. I was really worried about what was in the common household products and I started searching for natural ways to clean. What I found was that there were natural ingredients that I could use to make a DIY Multi Purpose Cleaner using essential oils!

    What is an essential oil?

An essential oil is a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.

    Lemon Essential Oil

What makes Lemon Essential Oil so great for cleaning?

Essential oils are one of my favorite all natural cleansers. They safe and natural to use (especially great when you have little fingers touching everything!), plus they are effective at killing surface bacteria! They also give a natural fragrance that can improve the quality of air in your home and boost your mood! – which is way better than smelling chemicals

One of my favorite essential oils to use for cleaning is lemon essential oil. Not only does it have a fresh, clean scent, but it is also antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral (That’s a very powerful punch!) Lemon is an air disinfectant and is invigorating and energizing – it always makes me just feel happy!

It is certainly not one of my favorites… but I do love all the tips and tricks of how I can do my laundry more natural!

Did you know that most laundry detergent and dryer sheets are FILLED with toxic chemicals??? It is crazy what is allowed into our homes.

When I became a mom, we started cloth diapering. When you use cloth diapers you have to be very aware of what you use in your washer and dryer (if you don’t line dry).

I started using Charlie’s Soap back then, and still use it today. With my cloth diapers, most of the time I would line dry – but I missed that fresh scent.

That’s when I learned that I could use essential oils IN MY DYER!!! These freshen your clothes naturally without the nasty chemicals from artificial scents.

We use essential oils all over our house. If you aren’t familiar with using essential oils, here are some really popular ways you can start using them today!
